Downy Woodpecker
Dryobates pubescens
Woodlands, parks, backyards· 6.5 in / 17 cm
"A small black-and-white woodpecker tapping methodically up a slim branch."
The story
The smallest woodpecker on the continent. They drum not to find food but to claim territory — listen for a faster, tinnier roll than the larger Hairy Woodpecker.
Conservation
Stable. Dead trees (snags) are essential nesting sites — leave them when safe.
One small thing you can do
Leave a dead branch standing in the yard if it's not a hazard. It's wildlife housing.
